I'm Not Registered to Vote

“I’m NOT Registered to Vote…”

Those are the words my little brother uttered to me the other day...

Now if you know me, then you know that confusedly following behind while badgering him about this oddity was next on my agenda (because letting him walk away unscathed just didn't seem right...). He didn't let that last for long though. With the quickness, his nonchalant attitude towards exercising his rights and protecting his liberties basically stopped me dead in my tracks.

Am I getting old, I pondered? Was he a Jehovah’s Witness and I hadn't realized it yet? For the life of me I just couldn't figure out WHY my little brother wasn't registered to vote and seemed to have no intentions of even doing so.

I mean, had he not heard of Bloody Sunday? ...he attends an HBCU in Alabama for crying out loud... Did he forget about how our parents were barely in their pre-teens when the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was finally passed? Or was he onto something???

Perhaps it was the electoral college's influence that swayed his decision during the 2016 election, or maybe it's the fact that no matter who sets foot into the Senate and House, scandals will emanate and all promises they vowed to keep while campaigning for our votes will fall to the wayside. And we can't forget how underrepresented African Americans are coupled with the many times we are slighted even as we fight for justice as advocates of peace and equality. Or, like I stated earlier, maybe he's onto something...

Thankfully, after seeing me fret over reasons and wondering if he was, in fact, smarter than the average bear, he finally decided to elaborate a bit! Phew!

"They're black sheep; well, most of ‘em are.

Figureheads who never truly let you dig deep. They put on this front and portray something/someone they are not. And thankfully, social media and various other resources help us capture some of this transparency yet to be seen from a lot of the candidates we have to choose from.

And another thing…what’s up with everyone being either incredulous or incompetent? It seems as though every 5 minutes there is a new scandal coming out to expose someone for numerous wrongdoings. And to top it all off, they are barely eloquent enough to dig themselves out of the whole their past transgressions placed them in. It’s a shame really…

...and sis, I've been lazy! Of course I'm going to register to vote!" ;)

Pretty smart kid, isn't he? Not as smart as me, but his intellect will do...for now at least!

Honestly though, I think the little tyke has a point. Even though he does have intentions on registering to vote, his lack of enthusiasm stems from the same sentiments you and I all share. Are the millennial candidates, once elected, going to do like their senior citizen predecessors and forge little to no change at all? Will Stacey Abrams get the respect she deserves once in office? Will justice finally be “for all?” Or is it all a ploy? A facade to get our votes and have their way with us once in office?

To be nice, I'll guess I'll go ahead and hold out hope on the premise of maybe, just maybe, the candidates we have to choose from are genuinely running for office to better our nation and the folks in it. I’ll also hold out hope for the American people - that they will cast their vote while placing all prejudices aside. We only have around 30-odd days to get it right. Therefore, we must exercise our right and choose wisely.

Am I being too optimistic? Giving everyone too much credit? You're probably right, but a girl can daydream, right?! :)

Raise your hand or, better yet, cast your vote by commenting below on your thoughts about our upcoming election. My brother and I can't wait to read your responses!
